#2 Mohammed bin Rashid $44 Million

#2 Most Expensive Wedding - The 1981 wedding of the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Princess Salama counts among the most high profile marriages that have ever taken place on the face of earth. Estimated to be a $44.5 million ceremony, this wedding took place on a stadium created by the groom’s father for accommodating the guests of the occasion. With 20,000 people attending the 7-day celebration, it has earned its name in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Prior to becoming the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was the Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates. His contribution in the development of Dubai is evident in the famous Palm Island and hotel Burj al Arab. Apart from his business career, Sheik Maktoum earned a name for himself in the world of business and charity.

How the occasion was dazzled by performers

To up the glam quotient of the opulent wedding, elaborate arrangements were made for 50 African and Arab performers to parade before the assembled royalty. A special wedding song was sung in honor of the bride and groom and the singer received a red Mercedes from the sheikh as reward. The fireworks that lit up the sky were in spectacular rainbow hues and accompanied by musical sound effects. The food arrangement was equally lavish, though sadly the cloistered bride could not be a part of it all.

The arrival of the groom was marked by the entrance of a milk white steed bearing him across the threshold to the bride’s palace. A royal convoy consisting of 20 camels decorated with precious gems and jewelries preceded him and bore the wedding gifts to Salama. What the princess brought on her part was three entire towns given to her by her father Sheik Hamdan laden with boutiques, high-rises and shops.
