#1 Chateau Lafite 1787
Most Expensive Wine in the World Having insatiable thirst for the best expensive wine is not new to the civilized world. The 1787 Chateau Lafite fetched the highest ever price tag of $160,000 in London. It was originally bought by Thomas Jefferson in France; you can still find his initials on the bottle.
The name Lafite is derived from the Gascon term ‘la hite’ meaning small hill. As suggested by the Lafite website, the Lafite vineyard was organized by the Segur family in the 17th Century and the estate soon garnered a reputation as a top-level wine making estate.
Receiving great acclaim from the Ambassador of France, Thomas Jefferson, the wine soon became the subject of much ado at Versailles. The specialty of this bottle of wine is that it bears Jefferson’s initials etched on the glass. Even at the Universal French Exposition of 1855, where wines of France were classified, Chateau Lafite became one of the only four to receive the highest classification, sidetracking its close competitors.
This expensive Lafite, is first fermented in 27 vats of Bosnian oak and spends between 24-30 months in French oak barriques. The whole process ranging from picking the grapes to bottling is strictly supervised. Even at the picking time, a very careful and serious selection process is carried out and in very abundant vintages.
There was once a time when French Chateaux dominated the world’s finest wines. Chateau Lafite- Rothschild occupies the finest crests in Pauillac. Through out the middle ages, up until 1798 the Seigneurs of Lafite were the high administrators of justice in the country. The first half of 19th century saw Lafite in the hands of the Vanlerberghe family and with the progress of time; the wine improved more upgrading its position to rank 1.
