Hemp Messenger Bag - Eco Friendly
A Hemp Messenger Bag has always been an important part of my being. Being a perpetual student, I have been toting around a messenger bag for many, many years. I started with a leather one, which was quickly stolen. I then moved to a plastic one which destroyed in the heat of my car during one Arizona summer day. Then, to save money, I went with the traditional heavy cotton messenger bags, and wore one after another out.
A good, sturdy, stylish messenger bag is not so easy to find. But, I finally found one! The Deluxe Hemp Messenger Bag, available at Building for Health Materials Center, is just what I was looking for. It is sturdy enough for holding all of my books, strong enough to handle my laptop, and still attractive enough to take on a date. The hemp fabric has been waterproofed so it is safe in all weather, and comes in an assortment of colors – acorn and oasis; black and grey; indigo and grey; natural and black; and oasis and indigo. A long heavy-duty strap adorns the 7” x 12” x 14.5” bag, with zippered pockets inside and out.
Hemp is now considered to be one of the most environmentally-friendly fibers on the planet. It is easily grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or other toxic chemicals, and its ecological footprint is small. That means you get a lot of hemp out of a little land. It doesn’t take a lot of natural resources to create this messenger bag.
Your parents might still think that your messenger bag made of hemp is either illegal or smokeable, but it is neither. Hemp is simply the non-psychoactive cousin of marijuana (Cannabis), and is raised for industrial, and not recreational purposes. Although hemp fiber and materials are legal in the United States, the growth of hemp is not. All hemp that is used in this bag and others is imported, usually from Canada or Europe.
Hemp is particularly environmentally-friendly due to its ease of domestication and cultivation. In addition, it actually contributes to a healthy environment by enriching the soil with nutrients and nitrogen, and contributing extra oxygen to our area. Hemp growth is used in some areas simply to slow erosion of the topsoil.
My Deluxe Hemp Messenger Bag has been sturdy, holding up to a lot of travelling, and a lot of books. It has already lasted longer than any of my previous messenger bags, and still looks great – I just stick it in the washer when it is dirty and it comes out looking like a brand new messenger bag!
